A Day at Carson Valley Residential Center
When the sun rises over the Pine Nut Mountains, Wilma
starts a new day as morning rays pour into her large
bay window in her apartment at Carson Valley Residential
Care Center. The first sound she hears are caregivers
making their morning rounds to insure that everyone
is waking up feeling well, getting dressed and heading
down for the morning meal in the formal dining room.

After
Wilma is dressed with a little assistance brushing her
hair, cleaning her eyeglasses and adjusting her hearing
aid, she grabs her cane and heads down to her dining
table to greet her tablemates. Wilma is reminded to
take her morning medications while she finishes her
oatmeal, poached eggs and fresh melon before starting
another day at Carson Valley Residential Care Center
a place she has called her home for the past three years.
After
breakfast, Wilma likes to sit on the front porch to
watch visitors and employees coming to work, pet the
kitty and enjoy the country scenery. Exercise class
starts at 10:00 so she hurries back inside to get her
favorite seat. Wilma enjoys lifting light weights, kicking
her feet and stretching her joints to keep them limber.
She believes that keeping the blood flowing and staying
in good shape is key to a healthy senior lifestyle.
Refreshments are served at the end of the session and
Wilma is ready to return to her room to watch her favorite
shows on t.v. and read a few more chapters in her book
before lunch.
Again
the caregivers are strolling down the halls to make
sure everyone is ready for the noon time meal and assisting
those that need reminders, escort services or special
attention. Wilma may have missed lunch today if the
caregiver had not awakened her from a nap for a gentle
reminder. Once seated at her regular table, she enjoyed
the homemade meatloaf dish and her favorite desert, fresh
baked apple crisp and coffee. After lunch, one of her
male friends, Jack, invited Wilma to join him in the
scrabble game activity with some other residents. Wilma
and Jack spend a great deal of time together playing
card games, dancing to live concerts each week, scenic
rides on the bus and watching the sunset on the back
patio while sharing stories, laughing and reminising
about their younger days. Jack's family told our staff
that when he was living alone after his wife passed
away he lost his will to live and became very depressed.
Now that he has moved to Carson Valley Residential Care
Center and met Wilma and other new friends, he is enjoying
life again, no longer needs his anti-depressant medications
and has gained a needed ten pounds.
Wilma
and Jack finish playing scrabble and have joined other
residents in the large common area to watch Oprah on
the large screen T.V. Snacks and refreshmetns are delivered
by the dietary staff to enjoy with the show. After a
while, everyone starts down to the entertainment area
to enjoy the musical concert and happy hour before dinner.
Jack goes back to his room to change into his dancing
shoes and Wilma freshens up with some lipstick and her
new earrings. Before long the entertainment has arrived
and everyone is gathered for the event. Some of the
residents like to just watch and take a trip down memory
lane while others swing and glide across the dance floor
to their favorite sounds of the past. Beverages are
passed around with plates of hors d' ourves and the
room is filled with joyful sounds of music and laughter.
There is little time to unwind, put your feet up and
get back in time for dinner so Wilma and Jack decide
to stroll outside and enjoy the sunset over the high
Sierra Mountains. They watch the wild finches landing
on the bird feeders and celebrate another wonderful
day. They talk about how peaceful and easy life has
become spending their golden years at Carson Valley
Residential Care Center.
